DIVIDE & CONQUER: COOLEST ROOM DIVIDERS

There are so many great room divider concepts out there for your home office it’s kind of mind-blowing. Here are a few picks ranging from the practical to the über-trendy:

The one pictured here -- IKEA's Expedit -- retails for about $200. Wall screens are another option that come in all different concepts and materials. I like the twist on this traditional wallscreen: built-in shelves. The shelves add functionality and rigidity. It comes in a variety of different finishes and retails for about $169. (You can get it at OrientalFurniture.com).

dVider Room divider

Fabric panels make great visual partitions and transmit soft light beautifully. dVider makes “modular room dividers” that are structurally secured (no tools required) and can be modified with unique contemporary designs. IKEA, a consistently low-cost innovator, developed the Kvartal system for fabric panels that slide on top and bottom tracks.

Eco-partition by Baltix

You can divide your space while keeping an eye toward sustainability, too. Metaefficient posted about eco-friendly, modular, moveable partitions by Baltix. The panels are made from sunflower boards, and the bonding agents are free from VOCs and formaldehydes.

Bellato Action

If money isn’t an issue and you really want to get funky, consider these innovative products to separate your home & work spaces: Italian furniture design/manufacturer Bellato makes the Action wardrobe, an ingenious hybrid of furniture and wall partition. Here, your office actually inhabits the divider. What’s more space-saving than that?

Softwall by molo design

Not extravagant enough for you? Check out Softwall. This is a lightweight, flexible, freestanding partition by molo that is easily and fluidly configured or can be compressed and packed away with ease. It’s available in translucent white or opaque black. I gotta say it’s a totally innovative and stunningly beautiful approach to what a partition can be.

Task Light Meets Magic Wand

Fluorescent Desk Lamp
To me, this lamp is about business-like efficiency with sharp, focused design. (A good message to embody, no?) Not magic really, just good design. While cheaper desk lamps are certainly around, this one makes a case for its moderate price tag with a hefty polished steel body and clean, honest details. The “spotlight” effect is reduced by the elongated head, casting a broader swath of light across your workstation. It doesn’t hurt that its fluorescent bulb uses less energy either.

Storage Quest

In every home office I ever used, storage space has been at a premium. It is a never-ending quest to find proper storage for projects, paperwork, and equipment in a spare bedroom office. Whenever possible, I look for storage solutions that blend in with the office. At the same time, your storage solution needs to be organized and accessible to accommodate your daily work requirements. Consider these options:
